Love your enemy

A new Alpha & Omega Portal will be added to the work which artist Bjørn Nørgaard created for Christian Church in Fredericia, Denmark. It will complete the work he did for the church in 2001-07 entitled: You shall love your enemy. It consists of a gilded altar piece depicting the last supper, two candelabras and a giant glass mosaic above the altar.

Bread and wine. Using the glass in the gilded altar piece is both humorous and poignant: Jesus holds a real bread and a real glass of wine. The ritual, the sacrament, is instituted here. All disciples have mugs and plates that stand out in the horizontal center of the relief, the table protruding. Hands and feet protrude the relief far more than the glories.

Dinner lights. Jesus is flanked by six feminine disciples on his left hand, and six masculine disciples to the right. This made me happy! I work with feminine, diverse disciples too.

The silver candelabras depict Jesus alone in the garden of Gethsemane, and Jesus washing the feet of John. Besides being placed on the altar they seem to suit the supper table. Along with the bread and the wine they connect the various spaces – those of the physical church, the art, the humour and that of faith and spirituality. The Holy Spirit is present. My breath.

Contemporary church art at its best, in my humble opinion. The Alpha & Omega Portal will directly face the altar piece and will match the triangular architecture. The portal will be made with bronze as is the altar piece.

There are 32 mosaics depicting 12 stories from the Old Testament and 12 from The New.

Glimpse

Full moon, july 2019

Usually aware of the moon, the other night was an exception.
I was woken up by feeling the sound of rain. It was dry, the sound made me get up and out, to look up. A single blast of light next to the fine full moon. Possibly a plane leaving into the shades of the blackened clouds.
I want you to see me, said the moon.

Vesløs congregation church in the North West of Denmark. I have ancestors here.

The altar shows Jesus healing the blind beggar. It reads:
‘Receive your sight; your faith has healed you’, it is from The Gospel of Luke, chapter 18, verses 35-43:

35 As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36 When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. 37 They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”

38 He called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

39 Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

40 Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, 41 “What do you want me to do for you?”

“Lord, I want to see,” he replied.

42 Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.” 43 Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.

The town has another church, Vesløs Church in Vesløs Field. It had an open porch, and a closed wooden door into the ship. With winged evangelists; Man is Matthew, The Eagle is John, The Lion is Marcus and the Ox is Luke.
